Diann Valentine is a relationship expert who has been helping women find love for years. I have been bringing women to Italy for the past five years, so for me, my career is about evolution and where do I go from here? After so many years, it made sense to start matchmaking and giving women advice on dating. After spending so much time in Italy, I began to recognize how Italian men respond to African American women.
They find us very attractive.

Ciao everyone! My name is Jade and I am a combined linguistics and psychology major at Northeastern University. My passion for writing stems from its ability to be therapeutic for the human mind. From my perspective, whenever I tend to feel overwhelmed or out of place, writing has always been a creative outlet for me to express my thoughts at the end of the day. Therefore, as a participant in a Traditional Study Abroad Program at John Cabot University, I am looking forward to writing about all of the remarkable memories I’ll make as well as the delightful excursions I’ll embark on during the Spring Semester.
Prior to studying abroad in Rome, I did some research on why some African-Americans tend not to study abroad. According to the Institute of International Education, out of all the Americans that study abroad only 5 percent of them are black. In fact, one of the reasons why African-Americans are less likely to go abroad is due to the cost.
Furthermore, the stereotypes and culture of another country may deter members of the African-American community from studying abroad. First thing I noticed after being abroad for four months in Italy was all of the staring. Italians stare at me primarily because of my skin color not because I wear American clothes, have braided hair or appear extremely tall. My skin color appears to just stand out in a predominantly white country.
Therefore, as you can see, diversity is lacking within the city of Rome. The only people of color I usually saw were black men selling counterfeit goods near the touristy areas of Rome.

As it turned out, dolce vita (Italian for “sweet life”) is not as dolce as it seems. Svetlana has been living in Italy for almost 3 years and she is one of the few people.
It was at dusk in early spring and I was waiting at a crowded bus stop in Verona, Italy after getting back from a weekend with a family friend in Milan. I was anxious about boarding the right bus to get back to the apartment that was my home for my week study abroad program. He gestured toward his car, expecting me to follow him. I looked at him with confusion. It slowly dawned on me he thought I was a sex worker and he wanted to buy my body for the night.
But I was not for sale. I was almost 22, a college senior in my last semester of school, and I was studying abroad in Italy. Though my first memory is in a refugee camp and I have always felt displaced, that night at the bus stop was the first time I felt displaced from my own skin. In their eyes, I was merely a pathetic girl whose body was not her own, whose sexuality was controlled by the men in her life—an object to be pitied and saved.
In the States, those who held these stereotypes were surprised by my take-charge attitude and activism. While my hijab was a sign of modesty, it did not keep men from hypersexualizing me. My Black African female body symbolized something to be plundered and hated. I was both an object of desire and an object of contempt.

People who pay attention to the narrative-setting function of the major media will enjoy this e-mail from a reader:. Imagine the gnashing of teeth from Richard Spencer and his ilk over miscegenation in the heart of Western civilization! But no, after the first two-thirds of the article, which proceeds as you would expect, we find a section lecturing us on the problematic assumptions behind the idea that black women can do better in Italy than in America though it is clear that many of them believe that.
In , the Pew Research Center found that black men are twice as likely as black women to have a spouse of a different race or ethnicity. Then she cites a research article suggesting that it is empirically true. We are told that this is the FACT that makes the idea misleading.
Answer 11 of Hello, I am a single black female, late twenties, and I was thinking of travelling to Rome alone this January, I was reading through several.
The available options for black women are diminishing for a multitude of reasons. Valentine has a italian history of visiting Italy herself. She first traveled there about 25 years ago when she was in her early 20s and has told going back religiously since. She and girl Damon Halloween even got married there five years ago, in a 15th Century castle at Lake Cuomo. Taste was that place for me. My love for that country runs very deep.

Then I decided to spend the fall semester of my junior year abroad in Florence, Italy. My roommates during my sophomore year had both studied in Italy and raved about their time. They gushed about the panini from a little shop around the corner from the picturesque villas that housed their study program, and regaled me with stories of fun parties and their Italian romances. I was ready for that to be my life: fun, food and a European love story.
But I was so caught up in my excitement that I neglected a crucial difference between me, my roommates and the majority of the other students I was studying with abroad.
Accommodations within Europe can be pretty bad sometimes. On another note, I ran a 10k there a few years ago. Take that into account in your training. I am a Halloween in Tribune and surprised that I have stayed here for a long time, 8 years and still counting. Tribune really stare a lot and before, it get me really uncomfortable. I take the public transport man to work. But now i got used to putting my headfones on and go on with my day. They dont bother me much now, i worked also for the UN and other agencies.
But it is not only italians who do this, even other women i see on the street. They might have a stereotype in their heads that if they are not italian they seeking be sex worker or girl cleaners or babysitters? I believe it is because a big percentage of office workers in europe are still women and they become curious as why other nationalities could afford to dating nicely. In my opinion, those men that have travelled a lot and tried to live outside of halloween tends to be more open minded while those who grew up and have never been outside tend to be more close minded.
Why Italian men never marry black women?
After a nine-month not to give birth in secret hiatus from Rome, an opportunity arose that was convincing enough for me to return to a city that I do not love. After living in the city on and off since April , Rome has failed to make me fall in love with her. Aside from a lack of places that I enjoy hanging out in, living in Rome as a black person can be a very unpleasant experience, an unpleasantness that smacked me in my face upon my return to this fine city.
What I did not immediately remember was that seeing a black woman walking down the street, for many Italians, seemingly, is similar to a unicorn citing. So I suppose, me, dressed for my job at the UN, may seem very strange to people who conceptualize black women as sex workers. My feeling of being a unicorn is further colored by stares of children on densely packed trains, similar to my experience in Japan, and groups of people turning and staring at me when I run past them during my weekend runs in the city.
